Chapter 5

Andy paced the living room as he waited for his parents to arrive.

"What are you worried about?" Benji asked. "Afraid they won't like me? Melissa did."

Andy chuckled. Melissa not only liked Benji, by the time she returned home they were practically best friends.

No, he wasn't worried his parents wouldn't like Benji. His problem centred around figuring out a way to get rid of them before the sun set for the day.

For some reason his parents had chosen Halloween to pay him a visit. The phone call from his father early that morning had thrown the proverbial spanner in the works, and Andy didn't want their plans for Halloween night going up in smoke.

"They won't stay all night," Benji said. "So stop worrying about it."

"I can't help it."

"It's not like they can stop me being here. I'm a ghost, what can they do?"

Andy turned to Benji in surprise. Of course, it had never come up. Benji didn't know there was quite a lot that his mother could do.

"What?" Benji asked.

"My mother's a ghost."

Benji looked at him for nearly a full minute without saying a word. "You never mentioned that." Andy could hear a trace of hurt in his voice.

Andy shrugged. "Sorry. I didn't deliberately keep it from you. It just never came up. She died when I was sixteen, but things never really changed much. She said it meant she'dretired from doing the cooking, cleaning and stuff, so my dad had to learn how to do the housework. He burnt lots of dinners and screwed up the washing so my football kit went pink, but other than that things stayed pretty much the same."

"The seeing ghosts is on your father's side of the family?"

"Yes."

"And your mother loved your father so much she decided to stay here with him, instead of moving on?"

"That's about right. That and Dad likes to take her to casinos as his lucky charm."

"Cheating at cards?"

Andy laughed. "They'll deny it if you ask."

"So, why are you worried about tonight? If your parents are in the same position we are, they'll want to be alone well before dusk."

Andy gave an exaggerated shudder. "Please don't say things like that. It's giving me some very disturbing images that I really don't want to have."

"Disturbing images?"Allison Jessop asked as she walked through the door.

"Can't you knock?" Andy muttered, just as his father banged on the other side of the still closed door.

She ignored him as she gave a squirming Benji a thorough once over.

Andy hurried to let in his father, hoping the visit would be a short one.

"Hi, Dad. Did you win your fortune?"

Barry Jessop snorted and shook his head, but before he could say anything, Andy's mother changed the subject.

"So, what's this Melissa tells us about you and the young rebel-without-a-body here?"

Slightly taken aback by the tone of his mother's question, for the first time Andy wondered if perhaps his parents weren't going to be as happy for him and Benji as he had thought.

He turned to his father for support, only to find the older man suspiciously silent.
